I’d be careful with using the T7 shield for ProRes. Yes it will work but if you try 4K60 in LOG and it will drop frames, the footage is unusable.

I tested the most popular SSDs from Amazon using my Windows PC, an Apple M1 Max MacBook Pro, M2 iPad Pro, M2 Mac Mini, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

I did use benchmark tools but I also did some realistic, large data transfers between these devices and the SSDs. The results vary wildly, but I share all the data here in this video. You can even use some of these faster ones on your Tesla 👀

  1. Recently bought the Crucial X10 Pro and returned it Amazon because – despite being sold as having onboard 256-bit AES – in fact as of today (12th Oct. 24) there is NO encryption available at all (until a new Firmware is released). WTF. Suggest your review should include ‘Security’ for removable SSD’s as well as all the usual factors?

  2. The X9 Pro has a “for Mac” option, is there a lot of difference? Im not sure its going to be for exclusive Mac use. Should i just get the normal one?

  3. Im using iphone 8plus/se/15pro/max, can I use it for saving photos only ? The crucial x9 im interested or which ssd you recommend for a beginner thank you

  4. Thank you! Extremely helpful. I have been using the Orico nvme enclosures. And although they do have models now with a fan, I might switch over to Acasis enclosures. Although it seems like the Acasis have a manual switch for the fan whilst the Orico fan is automatic. Thoughts about that?

  5. Best SSD video I’ve found. Very nuanced and detailed testing where it matters not just benchmarks. Real life performance matters

  6. Great channel.
Can I ask you a question… i want to buy SSD that I can load just movies on and then connect it my Samsung smart television.
What SSD would recommend for this only purpose?
    Thanks 🙏🏻

  7. The sandisk extreme is definitely the worst ssd ever. I have 2, one if for work and another is for personal and hobbies. I store all my work files, videos, photos, and editing project files on it. The work ssd just failed and lost everything as if someone just select all and delete everything. The personal/hobby ssd still works but now the transfer speed maxed out at 30-35mbps and sometimes just constant 10mbps

  8. Such high quality content, and what a thorough review! Thank you so much, an subscribed because you really deserve it man! 🙂

  9. Samsung Shields in either 2 or 4 TB capacity are very unreliable. I have had to send 2 of my 4TB Shields back to Samsung because their write speeds had dropped to almost nothing. Samsung had to fix their USB Controllers and update their software. They require frequent firmware updates via the Samsung Magic program and sometimes that doesn’t fix problems. One of my 2 TB Shields has just become useless due to glacial write speed. It’s firmware update took a long time to complete and didn’t fix the write speed problem so I’ll be sending it back to Samsung. The non-Shield SSD drives appear to be more reliable but from what I can see the Crucial drives hold up much better than the Shields.

  10. Excellent video Alex. 👍🏻

If another 4.3K viewers subscribe after watching this video it will take you over the 100K subscribers milestone! 😉

  11. Great video. Be great to see an update video on SSD’s for the iPhone 16 Pro and filming in pro res raw at 4K 120 💪🏼seems to be loads of issues trying to film this format to an external ssd

  12. Ive been using WD my whole life. In total, ive bought 5 of them. Why 5? EVERY single one corrupted or died within a single year and lost all my data!! Im DONE with them

  13. Love the video. Thanks for your research effort and being forward on how you picked. Hope to see more similar videos.

  14. Thanks! Since I’m a student, I can’t afford most of them so it will be great if there’s an more affordable option…

ASUS TUF GAMING AS1000-J (this has an ssd inside) and Crucial X9 (NOT pro) are the options as for now

  15. unfortunately 2 of my 3 x10 pros got corrupted and i never got them to work again, so i would not recommend those drives, even though i love the form factor

  16. Which adapter is best to use for T7 Shield 2TB for iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro Max….

Because I bought more adapters but none of them worked… so please which one is the best and to work 100%

  17. Hey alex 👋
I want to buy a SSD >1TB, just for my personal use (private data) and i would probably have this only SSD for years !
Which one should i buy so that it lasts long as well as the data in it !

    I’m confused 😐

    Just tell me one 🙂

  18. From what I have gathered on the Internet is that most of the portable SSDs that claim speeds of over 1000mb/s, can do so if your pc/laptop supports usb 3.2 (2×2) dual link.
If this is true could you make a video that showcases portable SSDs that support thunderbolt 3/4 for Apple devices.
    This will be most helpful.
    Thanks

  19. I swear to god, my crucial x6 1TB is always as cold as ice. To touch its actually cold. not even room temperature , and never has gotten hot.

My worst experience and nightmare is western digital and sandisk, my usbs keeps getting corrupted and get blazing hot to touch, many times i use something to hold it and pull the usb out

  20. I bougth a Sandisk portable ssd 1t a month ago, i Heard recently it have a problemas on extreme and pro modelos, the portable one have the same problem? I’m a little worried

  21. You speak or edited much to fast to listen and understand. // But I manage it with stop and go with also subtitle! I saw you get the subtitle translate in multi- language is a major ++++ Thanks.
Now my question is I have the Mac w/M1 and done memories of my photos, only done on the Crucial X8 2Tb everything work perfectly. But now I need the 4Tb Your test was done with Mac Mini M2 and to M1 Max MacBook Pro. Now what about for the result with iMac M1? ……Merci Alex!

  22. Whats the difference between enclosure and crucial x10 pro which one is more durable. Any pros and cons

  23. Honestly. this video goes directly against my extensive experience. Ive had at least 5 Crucial drives fail on me, and gave up on them. I bought ao combo of 980Pro’s and Samsung Portable Extremes, and the 4 Samsungs I use have never failed on me once. (perhaps it’s the last generation?). I would never touch Crucial again.

  24. Thank Alex for this EXCELLENT video regarding external SSDs, and NVMEs with enclosures. As of today, Oct. 10, 2024, out of more than 10 videos I’ve watched, yours is the BEST that I’ve ever watched because it covers all the top notch brands such as Crucial, Samsung, Sandisk, WD. It also contains multiple tables cover all the detailed results of multiple kinds of tests done on these products including heating issues.
